About Dr. Cobb

Dr. Maya Cobb, PhD · LPC · ACS · Author · Founder

I decided at 17 that I was going to get my PhD. Not because someone told me I could. Because I told myself I would. And I had to see that through for her. For the version of me that made that promise before she fully understood what it would take to keep it.

Years later, with a doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision, two practices, a workbook, and a book in progress, I am still working for her. And for every person who has been told, directly or indirectly, that the help they need is out of reach.

We need more Black higher education professionals in mental health. That is not just a statement. It is a reason. It is personal. And it is part of why I built what I built.

We cannot scream mental health awareness and then restrict who gets access.

Supervision with Dr. Cobb

I view supervision as more than simply collecting hours for licensure. My approach is relational, reflective, and development-focused. I draw from Bernard’s Discrimination Model and psychodynamic theory while also encouraging therapists to critically examine what they were taught in graduate school and how it translates into real-world clinical work. I believe many clinicians are trained in ways that do not always fully account for the complexity of real people, family systems, trauma, culture, or community dynamics.

I encourage supervisees to move beyond rigid textbook thinking and develop the ability to think critically, conceptualize deeply, and remain flexible in the therapy room. Clinical work is not one-size-fits-all, and I believe cultural humility should always remain central to the therapeutic process. I challenge therapists to consider how race, identity, socioeconomic status, family dynamics, spirituality, and systemic experiences impact both the client and the therapeutic relationship.

In supervision, I focus heavily on clinical judgment, therapeutic presence, case conceptualization, boundaries, ethics, self-of-the-therapist work, and developing confidence in one’s own clinical voice. My supervision style balances support with accountability. I strive to create a space where clinicians feel safe enough to ask questions, process difficult cases, explore countertransference, challenge assumptions, and grow into grounded, ethical, and culturally responsive therapists.

The Mission

What drives me is my determination to reach as many people as possible.

That determination is what led me to launch free walk-in therapy at Journey to Clarity Counseling in Southfield, Michigan. No insurance. No appointment. No barriers. Just show up and we will see you. Because I have watched too many people put off getting help not because they did not want it but because the system made it too hard to access.

It is what led me to create Complete Clarity Child Wellness Center in 2019, a psych-based tutoring model that integrates therapy and education because a child who is struggling emotionally cannot learn, and a child who is struggling academically is almost always struggling emotionally too.

It is what led me to write The Self-Care Hierarchy workbook — because self-care is not a bubble bath and someone had to say that clearly, with clinical grounding, in a way that actually helps people change.

Every practice, every resource, every framework I build is in service of the same goal. Reach more people. Remove more barriers. Break down more walls between the people who need support and the support that can change their lives.
